If you or your children have head lice, you may have already struggled to get rid of them because some cases of head lice are stubborn and don’t respond to conventional treatments. In fact, lice are now usually resistant to pharmacy shampoos and pestiticides! You may be determined to try something different, one that has worked for a lot of people. Or, you may just prefer to use something nontoxic and safe. Extra virgin coconut oil has a lot of home uses and health benefits, including being effective in dealing with head lice treatment and prevention. Bonus? It’s known for being a natural deep conditioner that leaves hair hydrated and silky! So let’s talk about how to do an at-home, coconut oil lice treatment.

How to Get Rid of Lice
Coconut oil works on lice mainly because it suffocates them and probably makes the hair shaft less appealing to them. You can also add tea tree oil
to your coconut oil for extra help, since it is a natural insecticide. Here’s what you do:1. Melt the coconut oil by setting your jar in warm water. While it’s melting, go ahead and remove any nits or eggs you can find from the hair. If you’re using tea tree oil, add a few drops to your coconut oil, and mix it up. Cover the scalp and hair in the oil/oil mixture and cover with a shower cap. Wear this for several hours, or overnight, and wash out (it may take a few washes to remove the leftover oiliness).
2. Use a coconut oil shampoo and conditioner to help remove them or keep them away. A lot of people swear by using these to get rid of lice and keep them gone for good.
How to Make Lice Stay Gone
1. Use coconut oil-based shampoo (I’m not convinced that all “coconut” shampoos will work, so I recommend using one that explicitly states coconut oil is in the ingredients, and just using your best judgment). You can also add the tea tree oil to the shampoo to make this more effective.2. Lice hate lavender, so it can be helpful to dab lavender oil on the skin (nape of the neck, for example).
3. After you’ve gotten rid of all the lice and nits, it’s important that you clean every item of clothing, fabric, and soft surface in your home that lice could have gotten into. The previous tip about lavender comes in handy here again, as you can use a lavender linen and fabric spray and/orlavender dryer sheets.
